Ball Handling

Having problems watching the video? Watch it directly at YouTube.

In this video we look at another fundamental activity that you need to focus on in order to develop your basketball skills – ball handling. Some people equate ball handling and dribbling. My view of basketball is simpler. For me, ball handling is as simple as handling the ball.

Your goal should be to get the basketball into your hands as often and for as long as possible. You want to become so familiar with the feel of the ball that having one in your hands becomes the most natural thing you can imagine. There are many ball handling drills and we’ll look at a couple in this video but remember that quantity is much more valuable than quality in this case. You should be handling the ball every day and any time you don’t have something else in your hands like a school book, a pencil or a fork.

In summary:

  • To be a good basketball player, it has to feel natural to have a basketball in your hands.
  • Take every opportunity to get the ball into your hands.
  • There are lots of ball handling drills; we look at just a few in this video.
  • The most important thing is to handle the ball as much and as often as possible.
  • Use time that you would otherwise be wasting watching television to handle the basketball. The television will help you keep your eyes off the ball and use touch alone to control the ball.
